With the hunt for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight entering its sixth day, thoughts are being cast back to the last high-profile air disaster.

In 2009 Air France flight AF447 left Rio De Janeiro bound for Paris but never made it.
The flight crashed into the Atlantic Ocean killing all 216 passengers and the 12 crew aboard.
It was single deadliest in the airline's history and only the second in the Airbus' time in service.
But what can we learn from back then as the search goes on?
Here's our comprehensive guide to that fateful day in June 2009 and what it could tell us about flight MH370.

When did it go missing?

Air France
AF447 was supposed to check in with Senegalese airspace and then Cape Verdean airspace at approximately 03:45 on 1 June 2009.
When no response was heard by 04:00 controllers tried themselves to make contact, but to no avail.
When fellow Air France flight AF459 tried to get in touch they too met with no response.
Malaysia Airlines
Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 last made contact with air traffic control only an hour after take off on March 8 2014 and hasn't been seen since.
