MTV VMAs 2014: Miley Cyrus left in tears as homeless date Jesse picks up Video of the Year award

Last year Miley Cyrus hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons after her twerk-tastic performance with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards and this year, the star made sure that it was for the right reasons.

Miley, 21, brought a date along to the event, and allowed him to accept her Video of the Year award on behalf of a charity organisation, which helps runaway teens and homeless youth in the United States.
The star had shared a cosy pic with Jesse en route to the awards, fuelling speculation that she had finally found love after Liam Hemsworth but Jesse's identity was unveiled when he took the mic.

As Jimmy Fallon announced that Miley was the winner, beating the likes of Beyonce and Jay Z, Jesse accepted the award as Miley perched on the side of the stage in tears.
"My name is Jesse and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I am one of these people.

Jesse continued: “Los Angeles, entertainment capital, has the largest population of homeless youth in America. The music industry will make over $7 million this year and outside these doors are 54,000 human beings who have no place to call home.”
As he wrapped up the speech, Jesse asked people to visit Miley's Facebook page where they will be able to donate to My Friend’s Place, a homeless shelter in Hollywood.
