Woman jailed for fraud by false representation - Reading
Thursday 12 September 2013, 2:37pm
A healthcare assistant has been given a prison sentence for a fraud offence after taking an elderly patient’s debit card and acquiring more than £2,000 in cash and goods.
Mwamvita Gozza, aged 39, of Admirals Court, Rose Kiln Lane, Reading, was sentenced on Monday (9/9) at Reading Crown Court after being convicted following a trial by jury.
She was charged on 27 June 2012 with committing fraud by false representation between 17 December 2011 and 22 December 2011.
In December 2011, the 92-year-old victim, Winifred Fuller, was transferred to the ward Gozza was working on at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. She noticed that a debit card was missing from her belongings and raised concerns with the hospital.
It was discovered the card had been used at an ATM within the hospital to withdraw cash and was subsequently used on 14 further occasions to purchase goods, acquiring a total of £2,146 in cash and goods.
Gozza was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. Mrs Fuller died in January 2012.
Investigating officer Det Con James Kyriacopoulos, said: “This was an abuse of trust by a person the victim should have been able to trust and was very distressing for both her and her relatives.
“This sentence sends out a message that offences of this nature will be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly and I hope it will bring some closure to Mrs Fuller’s family. It is very sad Mrs Fuller did not live to see justice being done.”
The victim’s daughter-in-law, Anita Fuller, said: “I think it’s very sad that somebody so vulnerable was taken advantage of. It distressed her a great deal, and the family felt disappointed that she was taken advantage of by someone she should have been able to trust.
“She would have been so upset that the suspect denied the offences throughout the trial. She was very happy with how the bank, police and hospital dealt with it so swiftly, all were very professional. I wish to express my thanks to Thames Valley Police, The Royal Berkshire Hospital and Lloyds Bank PLC for the way they dealt with this case.”
